Program Policies VIKING WRESTLING CONTRACT 2024/25
PURPOSE:
This athletic contract is designed to explain and to inform athletes, parents, and Coaches of certain expectations relative to participation in interscholastic athletics at Sunnyslope High School. Please always refer to the Parent/Student Handbook for all other rules, regulations, and policies.
Clearance athletes will participate with the team until they have met the full clearance obligation set by Glendale Union High School District. This includes: Physical on AIA form (annually), Brain Book, Opioid education, and Aktivate (register my athlete). You can find all information on the school website under athletics and clearance.
GRADES All Viking Wrestlers will be required to maintain all grades above a D in all of their classes. We will be doing a study table every day after school, before practice, to help aid in supporting a learning environment. If you are on the ineligible list for a week of computation, you will spend another half hour during practice for a week, studying and working on the class where you are struggling. You will also be ineligible for that week’s computation. There are exceptions made, case by case, and with the head coach only.
CONDUCT All SHS student-athletes are expected to adhere to all rules and responsibilities as outlined by the school and coach. Athletes are expected to understand that incidents of misconduct in or out of school may have a definite effect on participation on the athletic team. Areas of concern, such as, but not all inclusive are:
· Tobacco/Vape use of any form
· Alcohol use of any form
· Use of drugs, depressants, stimulants or any controlled substance
· Physical Altercation
· Verbal harassment
· Sexual harassment
· Theft and vandalism
· Bullying
· Truancy
An athlete may be suspended for all or part of a sports season for demonstrating behavior that is detrimental to the team. Suspensions will be dealt with on an individual basis. What is best for the team, first and foremost, and then what is best for the individual athlete, will be the approach of the Athletic Department.
TARDIES/CLASS There is no reason for student athletes to be tardy or act up in class. Our first role is to gain an education, and sports are the reward for doing a good job in the classroom. If you are tardy to class, there will be a conditioning consequence, as well as anything the teacher wants to assign. We will not be a distraction to the class; we will become a leader of learning in every class we are in. The first two weeks of the season, each athlete will take grade checks around. Those who are below the participation requirements of a D will continue to take grade checks around until they have satisfied the requirements to participate on this team.
TARDIES/ABSENT PRACTICE. You are tardy to practice; you will have twelve Vikings after practice. If you have three tardies in a week, you will not participate that week. If you are absent from practice, you will have to make up conditioning when you are back. For unexcused absences, you will not participate that week. Excessive absences will be handled by the head coach only, and only if notified one day before the known absence; if notified after, it will be unexcused.
EQUIPMENT/UNIFORMS Everyone will get a Pride Pack!
The student athlete is expected to keep all equipment clean and/or in good repair. It is important to maintain the good condition of the equipment for the athlete’s safety.
ALL EQUIPMENT/UNIFORMS MUST BE RETURNED CLEAN AND IN GOOD REPAIR BY THE END OF THE STUDENT'S SEASON, AS WELL AS THAT NIGHT OF COMPETITION.
The student athlete is financially responsible for all equipment issued. Should he/she fail to return issued items(s), the athlete must reimburse the school for the reimbursement cost.
THE STUDENT WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO CONTINUE PARTICIPATION IN THE SPORTS PROGRAM UNTIL THE ITEM(S) IS RETURNED OR REIMBURSEMENT IS MADE.
PROTOCOL TO DISCUSS CONCERNS WITH YOUR COACH
Coaches are available to meet with student athletes and parents when needed. The following procedures are expected of each parent/guardian to abide by:
1. Safety concerns/harassment/sexual harassment/bullying may be reported at any time (DON’T WAIT). Safety is and will always be our number one concern when it comes to our student-athletes.
2. Have the student-athlete discuss the issue with the coach; most of the time, this will resolve the problem. If not, proceed to #3.
3. Parents may call the coach directly to set up a meeting. Please DO NOT approach the coaches before, during, or after a game to discuss a concern unless the concern is an immediate emergency to the team.
4. If you are not satisfied with the outcome of your meeting, please contact the Athletic Director.
RIDING HOME WITH PARENTS
All SHS athletes will ride to and from all athletic competitions on the team bus/vans unless prior approval and a release form have been given to the Head Coach to ride home with a parent/s or legal guardian. In the event a student-athlete needs to ride home with their parents, advanced planning is recommended. Student-athletes will be released to their parent/legal guardian ONLY!!!
In the event an emergency occurs where advanced permission is not granted, the coach will use his or her discretion and judgment as to whether to release the student-athlete or not. Forgetting to use the advanced permission form does not constitute an emergency.
SPORT PARTICIPATION & COMMITMENT
When playing a sport, you are committing yourself, your family, your school, and most importantly, your team. All participants are to fulfill this commitment for the entire season. The season can be a long and grueling one, but it is your commitment and dedication that will get you through it. In certain situations, a student-athlete may feel that he or she wants to quit. We encounter many challenges in our adult lives, and learning how to deal with adversity builds and shapes our character. Athletic participation can be a great tool in helping us deal with different types of adversity. Every athlete is encouraged to finish what has been started. Athletes who quit are also “giving up” on themselves and those who depend on them.
Commitment to being a Viking Wrestler or Lady Viking Wrestler is one of the most valuable lessons learned in athletics. Concerns and frustrations can usually be worked out with proper communication between the athlete and coach.
-Once a commitment to a school team has been made, a player must follow through with this commitment. It is also unfair to other aspiring players who have failed to earn a place on the team.
1. Any Wrestler wishing to quit must notify the head coach in writing.
2. If an athlete quits or is dismissed from the Team at any time without justifiable cause (academics, injury, or family hardship) as determined by the head coach, the athlete will not be allowed to participate in the following season without a parent/athlete/coach meeting.
FUND RAISING IS A MUST. We do a Calendar Day sponsor campaign and a car wash. These are all mandatory, and everyone will be involved.
The t-shirt sponsor is the only fundraiser that is not required. Though it is not required to fundraise, the opportunity is there to help offset the cost of the pride pack that every wrestler will be purchasing. Contact the coach for more information if needed.
BUY OUT.
If you would rather do a buyout instead of fundraising, that is an opportunity. The buy-out clause is $450.00. This does not release you from participating in the team events of the fundraiser (tournament, car wash); it just releases you from having to fundraise for the event.
REFUNDS This year, we will be taking a trip to Las Vegas, Nevada, for a tournament. We will be taking Boys Varsity, Girls Varsity, and some extra kids who show what it means to be a Viking wrestler. If your Athlete is chosen to go, then they must complete the season. If the student is removed from the team for disciplinary issues or quits the team after the Las Vegas trip, then your Athlete will be required to refund the money spent on the trip, which equates to $300. If the student finishes the season on the team, then they will not be required to pay back any of the money. If your athlete is injured before the trip and is not able to compete, then they will remain behind during the trip. If your athlete is selected to go and is unable to wrestle due to missing weight or poor choices that lead to non-compete, then your athlete will be responsible for half the money $150.
Sign here and agree to make a firm commitment to your teammates, your coach, your school, and most importantly, yourself. By signing, you agree to all terms listed in the contract.
